Photography Marketing 101 with Vincent Laforet and Canon
If you ever thought that photography was all about the glory of capturing the moment or taking a great picture think a again. If you thought photography was all about getting women to undress. Stop reading.
Photography is just like any other trade in the world. With out marketing you will get nowhere. In todays business environment the marketing part is even harder than before. Tricks of the trade are many and how one goes about it varies from a photographer to photographer.
Personal contact is probably the best of them all. Thats why you should always carry a mini portfolio. It comes in handy also when you have to confirm to people posing in you images what you are all about. It might also come in handy when the police stops you in one of the tunnels thinking you are a terrorist.
To get noticed big-time you have to be in place with the big boys. That is where guys like Vincent Laforet has placed him self. Mention a pice of software or any extra gadget that has some thing to do with picture making and he is there. Do not think for a second that it is luck. It takes skills to get there. But more marketing skills than photography skills. Even mention a workshop over here in Iceland and he will be there.
There are couple of photographers that I have followed through the years and I have to admit I admire their marketing skills. Marketing skills have always been my biggest handicap. Do not get me wrong I can sell any thing, except my self or my photography. That is because I started thinking of my photographs as something with a meaning. Not just an other product.
Vincents and Canons newest stunt in marketing is probably the best in a long time. I know it is a retake from last year when EOS5 MK ll came out with its video possibilities. It worked then so why not try it again.
Just couple of days after Nikon announced its new Camera Canon brings out theirs. Followed by Vincent publishing the first video made by the camera. Followed by Canon pulling it from the web. Followed by PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. Followed by What is s Nikon??Followed by every one talking about CVV. Canon+Vincent+Video.
I think you got the point. :)
