Why Creative commons in photography is stupidity
Creative commons is a word you hear young photographers talk about to day as it were a very cleaver thing to use. My opinion is clear. It is stupid to have and use on a regular basis.
Creative commons in software business is a totally different thing than in photography. I can fully understand this type of license in the context of Software developing. It can help software programmers in their work developing a fully fledged software. On top of world wide users experience and feedback that can be implemented in future versions all kinds of dialogue appears regarding features that could be implemented. This road towards a commercial version of software is a fine road and works like the distribution method of drug sellers. Get people hooked and then sell them all the extras. On top of this you will have the developer and people and companies that will service the software. So based on this creative commons in the software business is or can be a very good thing.
Just look at the CSM system for this web site. Drupal.
So what has that to do with photography. Nothing and nothing at all.
As soon as you send your image out there to the information highway with the creative commons tag on it you have lost your control over the image and the likely hood of you making any money from that image disappears. Why would a user buy an image that any one and their grandma can download for free. Why would I ever buy an image any more. I can get them for free and on top of that the author has given me license do do what ever I like to the image.
I highly question this method of giving away your image. Do not get me wrong, giving away your image does not have to be a bad thing. I have done it several times. But always based on a criteria that the image should be used for good cause. By having those that want to use my image contacting me and explaining the usage before publication I can control where and how it is used.
After the publication under Creative commons I have no way of getting any thing out of the image, except maybe a link to my site. There is no service to the image. There is no further development to this image. There is no discussion board about the features of the image. There is nothing but the image sitting in someones lap and I can do nothing to control whos nor how he treats it
I consider my self a master of digital enhancements and color correction in Photography and have usually spent several hour on every image getting it to the perfection I like. I am as much an artist as a simple snappographer. It is my vision that is on display. And in the case of Advertising images my mastery of crafts. Therefore I like to control how it is used and how it is published.
I stand and fall with my images. I care for them. They are to me more than just an other snap. Therefore I can not give them away just like that. They contain part of my soul and I do care what happens to it. Photography and the photographs I make are the only selling part of my business. If you dont look at it from the artistic point of view then there is an other way, you can not live on air therefore you do neeed to sell your photographs, there is no other thing connected to them that you can sell. No update. No future service. No new version. It stands and falls with its self from the minute it is published
